Public care pathways
Overviews to help you ask better questions. Rules, hours, and fees change—each card includes a reminder to confirm on the official programme or facility before you rely on it.
- Public system
Community health centre (public)
Many parishes route first contact through a community health centre for assessment, education, and referral into the public system where appropriate.
- Call or visit your parish health department or nearest community health centre to confirm service hours and walk-in policy.
- Bring any existing prescriptions, lab results, and ID. Ask what referral steps apply to your condition.
Hours, capacity, and referral rules vary by site. Confirm with the facility or Ministry of Health channels before travelling.

Regional hospital & specialist referral (public)
Specialist care in the public system is often reached through a referral pathway from primary care or a hospital clinic—not always by walking into a private specialist first.
- If you are already in the public system, follow the referral you were given; if it has stalled, ask the facility’s records or appointments desk for the next step.
- If you are unsure where to start, a community health centre or public general clinic is a common first stop for a referral direction.
Pathways differ by region and specialty. This is not a substitute for what your treating facility tells you.
- NHF
National Health Fund (NHF) — card & chronic benefits
The NHF administers subsidies for a defined set of chronic conditions and related benefits. Eligibility and covered items depend on enrolment and current programme rules.
- Check whether your condition is among those covered and what enrolment steps apply.
- If you qualify, complete enrolment before assuming subsidy at the pharmacy (rules and participating outlets apply).
NHF formularies, contribution rules, and participating providers change. Always confirm on the NHF’s official information before relying on a subsidy.
- NHF
NHF & Drug Serv outlets
Subsidies are delivered through the programme’s rules and participating channels. JADEP/Drug Serv participation affects where and how a subsidy may apply for eligible people.
- Identify whether your plan uses community pharmacy vs Drug Serv for relevant items, per current NHF guidance.
- Confirm opening hours and stock availability with the specific outlet you intend to use.
Do not use Wayfora as a price quote—get confirmation at the counter against your card status and the current formulary entry.

University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) access
UHWI is a major public teaching hospital. Access to particular clinics and specialties usually follows the hospital’s referral and appointment process.
- If you have a referral, follow the appointment instructions you were given. If you were told to register as a new patient, ask the specific clinic for the registration packet.
- If you are trying to enter a specialty for the first time, ask your current public primary provider or the hospital’s information line what intake pattern applies. Look up the hospital’s current public website or phone tree before you travel—URLs change.
Clinic names, hours, and intake rules change. Confirm with UHWI or your referring facility for your situation.
